Windows 11 will soon support dark mode for Run dialog box

Windows 11 has long embraced dark mode, yet a noticeable inconsistency has persisted between newer applications and their older counterparts. Legacy dialog boxes and applets have remained stubbornly out of sync with the dark theme, creating a visual dissonance for users. Among these outdated elements, the Run dialog box stood out, but recent updates promise to bring it into alignment with the modern aesthetic.

On October 10, Microsoft released Windows 11 Build 26120.6780 (KB5067103) to Beta Channel testers, marking a significant step forward by finally integrating dark mode into the Run dialog. Users who activate dark mode and invoke the Run dialog using the Win + R shortcut or other methods will now find it harmoniously blended with the dark theme. The top border presents a deep black hue, while the rest of the interface adopts a gentle grey, ensuring a visually soothing experience.

More dark mode upgrades coming to Windows 11

In addition to the Run dialog, tests conducted by Windows Latest have revealed that dark mode enhancements have extended to various other components. These include the file transfer dialog, confirmation prompts for file deletions, and the copy and replace dialog, as well as the Recycle Bin’s delete confirmation.

Interestingly, Microsoft appears to be steering clear of rewriting these legacy dialogs in modern frameworks like XAML or WinUI, which some may view as a prudent decision. The modern dialogs have garnered a reputation for sluggish performance, as evidenced by the File Explorer’s slower load times attributed to its WinUI foundation.

While the introduction of dark mode improvements is a welcome accessibility enhancement, it highlights the ongoing journey towards a fully cohesive user interface. Notably, the Control Panel and its applets remain resistant to the dark mode transformation, leaving elements like the File Explorer Properties window starkly white against the dark backdrop.

Why is it so difficult to update older dialogs to use dark mode on Windows 11?

The challenge of updating all dialog boxes to embrace dark mode stems from the nature of Win32 UI, which does not automatically inherit dark mode unless each component explicitly opts in and is designed to accommodate it. Consequently, achieving a system-wide dark mode remains elusive, even when users enable it through settings. Nonetheless, the recent updates have alleviated some concerns by addressing one more tool in the user’s arsenal.

Windows 11 was envisioned as a polished, modern operating system, yet after four years, many aspects still require refinement. The anticipated retirement of Windows 10 may provide the necessary breathing room for Microsoft to finalize a comprehensive dark mode experience in the coming year.

Agentic action in Settings

The dark mode enhancements are just one facet of Windows 11 Build 26120.6780, which also brings improvements to the Settings app for Copilot+ PCs. Notably, the Recommended page will now showcase more agentic actions, displaying recently modified settings alongside quick access buttons for toggling their states. For instance, if a user has recently activated Do Not Disturb mode, a convenient button will allow for swift adjustments.

Agentic action refers to a streamlined, one-click option to modify settings or enable features that would typically require navigating through multiple menus. This functionality extends to the Settings app’s search bar, where typing commands like “enable dark mode” will yield relevant options, complete with buttons for immediate changes—eliminating the need to navigate through various pages.

The current design of the Settings app, which lacks support for multiple windows, can lead to a cumbersome user experience, requiring extensive back-and-forth navigation. While multi-window support would enhance usability, the introduction of agentic actions offers a practical solution for expediting setting adjustments. Unfortunately, those without a Copilot+ PC will not benefit from the new agentic search capabilities in Settings.
