Windows 11’s May Optional Update Lands on the Release Preview Channel

Windows 11 May Update Unveils Exciting Features for Users

The May optional update for Windows 11 has made its debut on the Release Preview Channel, setting the stage for a broader rollout anticipated in the final week of the month. This update introduces several innovative features aimed at enhancing user experience, including shared audio capabilities for Bluetooth LE audio accessories and simultaneous camera access for multiple applications.

Among the notable enhancements included in the KB5089573 update for Release Preview Insiders are:

  • Shared audio: This feature allows two users equipped with Bluetooth LE audio accessories to enjoy the same audio stream simultaneously. Activation is straightforward, accessible via the Quick settings panel located on the taskbar.
  • NPU usage in Task Manager: For devices equipped with Neural Processing Units (NPUs), Task Manager now presents optional columns for NPU and NPU Engine on the Processes, Users, and Details pages. Additionally, users can view NPU Dedicated Memory and NPU Shared Memory columns on the Details page.
  • Multi-App Camera support: Users can now leverage their camera stream across multiple Windows applications concurrently, enhancing versatility and functionality.
  • Magnifier improvements: Enhancements to this accessibility feature ensure clearer and more consistent announcements when utilized with a screen reader, promoting a more inclusive experience.

Microsoft has indicated that these updates are designed to improve app launch speeds and enhance core shell experiences, including the Start menu, Search, and Action Center. Furthermore, the update introduces optimizations aimed at boosting download performance and managing bandwidth usage within the Microsoft Store.

In an unexpected twist, Microsoft has also released a first build of version 26H1 on the Release Preview Channel. This build (28000.2173) appears to align with this month’s Patch Tuesday update for non-Insiders. However, its purpose remains somewhat ambiguous, particularly given Microsoft’s prior statements that Windows 11 version 26H1 is intended solely for new devices, specifically those powered by Qualcomm Snapdragon® X2 Series chips.

As Windows 11 version 26H1 is classified as a “targeted release” tailored for specific hardware, Microsoft has clarified that devices running this version will not be eligible for the next annual feature update scheduled for the latter half of 2026. While these devices will have a pathway to future Windows releases, the practical implications of this remain to be fully understood.
