If you were a Windows user during the late 1990s or early 2000s, the nostalgic sound of 3D Pinball for Windows – Space Cadet likely brings back fond memories. This surprisingly adept virtual pinball table was included at no extra cost with several Microsoft operating systems, up until Windows XP. While it captured the essence of real pinball, Space Cadet was not derived from any existing physical table; instead, it was a digital creation that formed part of the Full Tilt! Pinball software collection launched by Maxis in 1995.
The Quest for a Physical Table
Over the years, discussions among enthusiasts and hobbyists about crafting a physical version of Space Cadet have been frequent, yet tangible progress has remained elusive. One notable attempt came from Deeproot Pinball, which developed a reskinned prototype of Space Cadet’s layout with plans for a 2021 release. Unfortunately, the company faced collapse amid allegations of fraud, leaving the project in limbo.
However, hope springs anew with hobbyist CNCDan, who is determined to bring a physical Space Cadet table to life. In a recent video, he chronicles the beginning of his ambitious build process. His project already features 3D-printed mechanical flippers, pop bumpers equipped with embedded LEDs, slingshots, and a raised playfield—all meticulously designed to replicate the original Windows experience.
Challenges in Creation
While the digital Space Cadet table was free from the constraints of the physical world, CNCDan has encountered several challenges related to the size and positioning of the table elements. After adapting the on-screen, perspective-shifted view of the Space Cadet playfield to fit a 1-meter-tall table, he discovered that the resulting playfield measured just 56 cm in width. This dimension is on the smaller side for commercial pinball tables, leading to playfield bumpers that are only 53 mm wide—significantly smaller than any prebuilt bumpers available on the market.
As CNCDan navigates these hurdles, his journey reflects the passion and creativity that drives hobbyists to breathe new life into beloved classics, bridging the gap between the digital and physical realms of gaming.
