Windows Insiders Can Test a Decluttered Windows Search Experience

Windows Insiders participating in the Experimental Channel are now invited to explore a series of enhancements to the Windows Search experience, all shaped by valuable user feedback. Microsoft is introducing features that allow users to conceal recommended content and trending searches, while also elevating the quality of search results by emphasizing local outcomes.

Enhanced Search Functionality

“You’ve been asking for a search experience that is faster, more relevant, and easier to navigate—whether you’re launching an application, locating a file, or adjusting a setting. Given that the Windows Search Box serves as the starting point for many users, we prioritized making results more reliable, easier to scan, and clearer before you click,” stated the Windows Insider team in their latest announcement.

Among the notable changes, Windows Insiders can now streamline their Windows Search home interface to display only recent searches upon opening. Additionally, the preview pane has undergone a redesign, featuring clearer headers and more informative metadata to enhance user experience.

In the Settings menu under Privacy & Security > Search, Insiders will discover new options to hide web and Microsoft Store suggestions from the search results. When web results are activated, the preview pane will no longer display promotional content, allowing for a more focused search experience.

“We’ve initiated a first round of ranking improvements to ensure that more relevant settings appear higher in search results, with further adjustments planned in the upcoming months,” the Windows Insider team elaborated. Local results are now given precedence over web and Store suggestions when they represent a better match for the user’s query. Furthermore, Windows Search has been enhanced to accurately locate content even when queries contain typographical errors, and it now supports two-character file searches.

These improvements to Windows Search will be rolled out gradually to Insiders on the Experimental Channel, with the option for manual activation available through the new feature flags menu in Windows Settings.
