Windows Notepad to get AI text summarization in Windows 11

Microsoft is currently piloting an innovative AI-driven text summarization feature in Notepad, alongside a new “Draw & Hold” functionality in the Snipping Tool designed to enhance drawing precision. These developments are part of the company’s ongoing efforts to integrate advanced AI capabilities into its software suite.

Notepad’s New Summarization Tool

The newly introduced feature, aptly named “Summarize,” is being rolled out to Windows 11 Insiders in the Canary and Dev Channels, specifically for those who have upgraded to Notepad version 11.2501.29.0. This highly anticipated tool allows users to condense lengthy text with ease.

According to Dave Grochocki, Principal Group Product Manager for Windows Inbox Apps, users can initiate the summarization process by selecting the desired text, right-clicking to choose “Summarize,” or utilizing the shortcut Ctrl + M. “Notepad will generate a summary of the selected text, providing a quick way to condense content,” Grochocki explained. Users can also adjust the summary length to refine the output to their liking.

For those who prefer a cleaner interface without AI options, Notepad offers the flexibility to disable these features within the app’s settings. It is important to note that users must sign in with their Microsoft personal account to access the Summarize tool, which utilizes AI credits associated with Microsoft 365 Personal, Family, and Copilot Pro subscriptions.

Enhanced Functionality in Snipping Tool

In addition to the Notepad updates, Microsoft has introduced a “Recent Files” option within Notepad, accessible from the Edit menu. This feature allows users to easily reopen recently closed documents, streamlining the workflow for those who frequently switch between files. Users can manage their history of closed files by clearing the list or disabling the feature in the settings if they prefer not to retain this information.

Moreover, the Snipping Tool has received an update with the introduction of the “Draw & Hold” feature in version 11.2502.18.0. This enhancement enables users to draw precise lines, arrows, rectangles, or ovals using the built-in pen tool, catering to those who require accuracy in their annotations.

Grochocki noted that these features are gradually rolling out and may not be immediately available to all Insiders in the Canary and Dev Channels. The company plans to monitor user feedback closely before a broader release.

Ongoing AI Integration in Notepad

This latest update is part of a larger initiative to incorporate AI functionalities into the Windows 11 Notepad application. In November, Microsoft introduced a text rewriting tool known as “Rewrite,” previously referred to as CoWriter. This feature leverages generative AI to assist users in rephrasing sentences, adjusting tone, and modifying content length.

Additionally, Microsoft has made strides in enhancing Notepad’s capabilities with the inclusion of a built-in character counter in December 2023 and a spell check and autocorrect feature for all Windows 11 users in July 2024. These updates reflect the company’s commitment to evolving its software to meet the needs of modern users.
