Microsoft’s Executive Vice President, Yusuf Mehdi, recently shared an intriguing update on the company’s blog, revealing that Windows currently powers over a billion active devices worldwide. While this figure may initially appear robust, a closer examination reveals a more complex narrative. According to ZDNET, Microsoft’s annual report for 2022 indicated that over 1.4 billion devices were operating on Windows 10 or 11. This discrepancy suggests a significant decline in Windows’ user base, with an estimated loss of around 400 million users over the past three years.
This decline likely explains Microsoft’s vigorous campaign to encourage users to transition to Windows 11, particularly as support for earlier versions wanes. The strategy aims to ensure that users either upgrade their existing systems or invest in new hardware capable of running the latest operating system. While macOS presents a competitive challenge to Windows—especially following the introduction of Apple Silicon—it’s important to note that the exodus of those 400 million users has not necessarily translated into a surge in MacBook sales. In fact, reports from Statista indicate that Mac sales have also experienced a downturn, with the once-dominant computer line now contributing a mere 7.7% to Apple’s revenue.
Smartphones and tablets do enough, for some
The allure of the MacBook Air, particularly its impressive battery life, is undeniable. However, for budget-conscious consumers seeking quality alternatives, the market is replete with Chromebook options. With many educational institutions adopting this platform, students—who will eventually become the next generation of computer buyers—are increasingly familiar with Google’s offerings. This familiarity may lead them to favor Google over Microsoft when the time comes to purchase their own devices.
In the past, alternative operating systems posed little threat to Microsoft’s dominance. The widespread availability of the Microsoft Office suite, along with various software exclusive to Windows and the generally lower price point of PCs compared to Macs, solidified Windows as the go-to choice for users needing basic computing capabilities. However, the rise of free, web-based applications like Google Docs has shifted the landscape, prompting many users to reconsider their loyalty to Microsoft in favor of more accessible solutions.
