Microsoft Store Introduces Multi-App Installer Feature

In a subtle yet significant move, Microsoft has rolled out a multi-app installer option for its Microsoft Store, enhancing the user experience in a way reminiscent of third-party package installers. This new feature allows users to compile a “shopping list” of applications, enabling them to install multiple apps simultaneously rather than one at a time.

Interestingly, this feature has not been accompanied by a grand announcement from Microsoft, leaving many users unaware of its existence. Currently, the multi-app installation option is accessible only to select users of the web-based version of the Microsoft Store, adding an element of exclusivity to its rollout.

The installation process is somewhat unconventional. As reported by The Register, users begin by selecting their desired apps through the web interface. However, once the installation is initiated, the process seamlessly transitions to the Microsoft Store app. This hybrid approach raises questions about whether Microsoft plans to integrate this feature directly into the Store app or maintain its current dual-platform functionality.

The feature was first highlighted by a user on X, who noted: “The web version of the Microsoft Store now allows you to create ‘Multi-app installs’. The 48 apps divided over these 6 categories so far seem to be the only ones supported.”

As indicated in the post, the ability to select multiple apps for installation is currently limited. Users can choose from a selection of just 48 apps, categorized into six distinct groups. The rationale behind these limitations remains unclear, as does the criteria for the specific apps that have been prioritized for this feature.

When utilizing the app selector, users can add up to 16 apps to their installation list at once. While this number may evolve over time, Microsoft has yet to provide any insights regarding potential changes to this limit.

For those interested in exploring this new functionality, the web-based version of the Microsoft Store is available for users to experiment with the multi-app installation option.
