pgEdge Announces pgEdge Platform Constellation Release (v24.7)

ALEXANDRIA, Va., Aug. 7, 2024 /PRNewswire/ — pgEdge, Inc., a frontrunner in distributed Postgres solutions, has unveiled the pgEdge Platform v24.7, also referred to as the Constellation Release. This iteration brings forth significant enhancements in Postgres logical replication, featuring parallel processing, large object support, and refined error handling. These advancements position pgEdge as a compelling open-source alternative for legacy database workloads that demand multi-master capabilities.

Innovative Features for Enhanced Performance

pgEdge stands out as the only fully distributed PostgreSQL solution that is open-source and entirely built on the standard PostgreSQL database. Its unique multi-master (active-active) replication operates across geographic regions, effectively minimizing latency and ensuring ultra-high availability.

In collaboration with its customers, partners, and community, pgEdge has introduced several key features:

  • Large Object Logical Replication (LOLOR): This PostgreSQL extension ensures that large objects are compatible with logical replication, allowing applications that store media assets and large files in PostgreSQL databases to migrate seamlessly to pgEdge without modification.
  • Replication Exception Handling and Logging: A new exception log table captures replication errors, preventing them from hindering subsequent changes. This feature enhances user experience by facilitating easier troubleshooting and management of replication errors through tools like the pgEdge Anti-Chaos Engine (ACE).
  • Replication Repair Mode: Users can now enable or disable “repair mode,” allowing them to opt-out of replicating changes from specific database nodes. This functionality grants users greater control over replication processes and supports error remediation without disrupting the entire cluster.
  • Automatic Replication of DDL Commands: Developers can now update the database schema on a single node, with changes automatically propagated to other nodes in the cluster, streamlining support for distributed PostgreSQL applications.
  • Snowflake Sequence in Postgres Extension: This integration simplifies the management of sequences in multi-master replication scenarios, ensuring unique sequence numbers across different regions without requiring application code changes.

High Performance Parallel Replication Coming to pgEdge Platform in Q4
In Q4, pgEdge will introduce Parallel Replication features, utilizing multiple replication slots for parallel processing within a distributed PostgreSQL cluster. This enhancement is set to significantly boost replication throughput for high-traffic, cross-region OLTP workloads, reducing replication lag and ensuring timely data synchronization across all nodes.

Phillip Merrick, Co-founder and CEO of pgEdge, expressed enthusiasm about the new release, stating, “With these features and enhancements, we continue our commitment to advance distributed PostgreSQL capabilities within the community, making it easier to deliver applications that are always available and responsive.”

pgEdge Platform is available as downloadable software that can be self-hosted and managed in both on-premises and cloud environments, including major providers like AWS, Microsoft Azure, and Google Cloud Platform. Additionally, pgEdge Cloud, a fully managed cloud service based on pgEdge Platform, is expected to be generally available in Q3.
