Enthusiasts of Windows tools are in for a treat as the PowerToys team collaborates with the Windows Terminal developers to introduce an exciting new integration. Kayla Cinnamon from Microsoft recently shared a glimpse of this upcoming feature, which promises to enhance the user experience for those utilizing the Windows Package Manager, affectionately known as winget.
Streamlined Installation Experience
The integration aims to simplify the installation process for users who may not be well-versed in winget’s syntax. Previously, users had to navigate through a somewhat cumbersome command line, requiring knowledge of basic commands to execute installations. However, this new functionality appears to be designed with accessibility in mind. Users will soon be able to search for their desired software and install it with just a few clicks, eliminating the need for complex command inputs.
This development is particularly significant as it encourages users to move away from traditional methods of software acquisition, such as the Microsoft Store or web browsers. Instead, winget operates by running from a manifest that directs it to the necessary files online, including those hosted on the Microsoft Store itself.
- Current Limitations: The existing syntax for winget can be less intuitive compared to other package managers. For instance, while Ubuntu users can simply type “apt install gimp”, winget requires a more convoluted command: “winget install gimp.gimp.”
- Anticipated Ease of Use: The forthcoming integration with PowerToys is expected to streamline this process, making it more user-friendly and accessible to a broader audience.
While a specific release date has yet to be announced, the PowerToys team is known for their regular updates, typically rolling out enhancements at least once a month. This suggests that the wait for this innovative feature may not be too long.
