Google’s new Windows desktop app brings a Spotlight-like search bar to PC

Google is currently piloting an innovative search application designed for Windows users, a move that could redefine how individuals interact with their digital files. According to a recent blog post, this app, now accessible through Google’s Search Labs for personal accounts, introduces a seamless way to search local files, Google Drive content, and the broader web, all with the simple Alt + Space shortcut.

The installation process mirrors that of Chrome, requiring users to sign in for a personalized experience. Notably, the app integrates Google’s visual search feature, Lens, allowing users to select images directly from their screens and even translate text. For instance, students can highlight a math problem from their homework and request assistance from Google’s AI Mode to find the solution.

Much like the familiar functionality of Google’s web search engine, the app enables users to toggle between various results, including AI Mode, Images, Shopping, and Videos. Users can also choose between dark and light modes, enhancing their visual experience. This application draws parallels to Mac’s Spotlight feature, which facilitates searching through files, applications, and online resources. While Windows has traditionally offered a built-in search feature, recent enhancements, including the launch of Copilot Plus for PCs, have elevated its capabilities.

Upon installation, the app places a customizable search bar directly on the desktop, which can be repositioned and resized according to user preference. The search bar can be minimized using the Alt + Space shortcut, providing a streamlined interface. Additionally, users have the flexibility to enable or disable AI Mode and modify the shortcut settings by accessing their profile picture and selecting Configurations.

Currently, the app is available for experimentation in English and exclusively for users in the United States, requiring a PC running Windows 10 or later. Interested users can activate the experiment in Labs to explore this new tool.

Update, September 16th: Additional information about the app has been included.
