Paradox Interactive has officially announced the closure of Millennia, just 18 months after its initial launch. Developed by C Prompt, this title was envisioned as a direct competitor to the established giant, Civilization 6, and aimed to pave the way for the anticipated release of Civ 7 in 2025. However, despite efforts to enhance the game through updates and expansions, Millennia struggled to gain traction, ultimately leading to its demise.
Mixed Reception and Final Farewell
Upon its release, our reviewer Alex awarded Millennia a commendable score of 7/10, praising its reactive gameplay while highlighting several key issues that hindered its ascent to greatness. Unfortunately, C Prompt was unable to distinguish the game sufficiently within the competitive landscape of 4X titles. The two downloadable content expansions, Ancient Worlds and Atomic Ambitions, also fell short of achieving the 70% positive review threshold necessary to escape the ‘mixed’ rating category.
In a heartfelt message, Paradox stated, “With this patch, we are sadly coming to the end of an age. This will be the final patch for Millennia. Thanks to C Prompt for their work and support of this game. We at Paradox will no longer be active on community platforms for Millennia, but you can continue counting on us for support needs, and the game will remain available to play indefinitely.” The message expressed gratitude to players for their support throughout the journey, from the dawn of Ancient Worlds to the ambitious heights of Atomic Ambitions.
While Millennia showcased some intriguing concepts, it ultimately lacked the essential elements to elevate it above its competitors. This announcement arrives as the fortunes of its major rivals appear to be improving. Early feedback regarding Civ 7’s patch 1.2.5 suggests it is a positive development, while Ara 2.0 addresses several player requests. Additionally, the upcoming launch of Endless Legend 2 has generated excitement, despite Amplitude’s long road ahead in early access.
In light of the closure, recent Steam reviews for Millennia have taken a downturn. One user lamented, “This was my promising Civ 4 replacement, but sadly abandoned by Paradox before it could mature.” Another expressed disappointment, stating, “This could/should have been good, but sadly it is unfinished and seemingly abandoned. I feel so ripped off.” A third user remarked on the rapid content release, saying, “They sold an expansion pass and pumped out the content as fast as possible to then abandon the game. This has a certain ick to it.”
Millennia update 8 is out now. Players can explore the patch notes on the Paradox forums for details on fixes, localization changes, and improvements to mod support.
