Industry veteran Tero Virtala has stepped down as the CEO of Remedy Entertainment, a decision that has taken effect immediately, as announced in a recent release to investors. In his place, Markus Mäki, one of the founders of Remedy and a board member since 1995, will assume the role on an interim basis. Mäki, who previously served as the chair of the board, expressed gratitude for Virtala’s contributions during his tenure.
Leadership Transition
“I want to thank Tero Virtala for his substantial contribution to the management of Remedy since 2016. I personally thank Tero for good cooperation and wish him all the best for the future,” Mäki stated, reflecting on the collaborative spirit that has characterized their working relationship.
Virtala took the helm as CEO in 2016, steering the company towards greater independence and reducing its reliance on third-party partnerships for game releases. This strategic pivot culminated in the launch of Control in 2019, a title that aimed for triple-A quality while operating on a significantly lower budget. Under his leadership, Remedy also secured the publishing rights for both Control and the Alan Wake series from Digital Bros and Microsoft, respectively.
Recent Challenges
Despite these ambitious moves, Remedy has faced challenges in 2025. The company introduced its first multiplayer game, FBC: Control, in June, but the live-service shooter did not meet performance expectations. This underwhelming reception led to a profit warning issued earlier in October, highlighting the difficulties the company is currently navigating.
