Microsoft is enhancing the Phone Link experience with a significant upgrade aimed at addressing a longstanding issue for users streaming Android apps on Windows 11. The latest update, version 1.25112.33.0, introduces an expanded view option that allows users to stretch Android applications beyond the restrictive, phone-sized window that has been a source of frustration for many. This new feature is designed to make apps appear more natural on larger monitors, enhancing usability and overall experience.
What expanded view actually does
Historically, Phone Link has streamed Android apps in a narrow portrait layout, mimicking the dimensions of a smartphone regardless of the size of the PC display. Users have often resorted to rotating their phone screens and utilizing the ‘Open Phone Screen’ option as a workaround; however, this method only benefits apps that support landscape mode. Unfortunately, applications like Uber remain confined to an uncomfortable layout, limiting their functionality.
As reported by Windows Latest, the expanded view feature introduces a small icon adjacent to the window controls. By tapping this icon, users can widen the app to utilize more of their desktop space. This feature works particularly well with applications that already accommodate larger screens. For instance, VLC and Amazon scale seamlessly to fill the window, while Uber continues to display thick black bars on either side due to its design limitations. In contrast, WhatsApp performs admirably, benefiting from tablet-style optimization in its Android version.
However, there are some limitations to consider. The expanded view does not enhance font resolution, which may result in slightly blurry text when stretched. Additionally, the window cannot be maximized and defaults to snapping to the left edge, which may feel somewhat unconventional. While the update is not without its imperfections, it represents a step forward in creating a more desktop-friendly Android experience through Phone Link, making it a more reliable tool for users.
In related developments for Windows 11, Microsoft is also implementing several practical upgrades aimed at improving daily usage. These enhancements include streamlining app updates and removals, introducing new privacy safeguards for copy and paste functions, and launching a new Themes section that brings the personalization of PCs closer to the customization options typically found on mobile devices.
