What you need to know

In a notable shift from its traditional aesthetic, Google is currently piloting a feature dubbed ‘Color your Search,’ which introduces a palette of soft pastel hues to the Search interface. This innovative update aims to enhance user experience by allowing individuals to personalize their search environment.

  • The feature presents users with a selection of ten muted color options, transforming the top bar and overall theme of the Search interface.
  • At this stage, the colorful enhancements appear to be exclusive to larger-screen devices, such as tablets and foldable smartphones.

Historically, Google Search has maintained a consistent look, primarily featuring stark white or dark grey backgrounds, regardless of whether users opted for light or dark mode. However, this new update signifies a potential departure from that uniformity.

The initiative was first uncovered by 9to5Google, revealing that users can now add a splash of color above the search field, where the Google logo and profile icon are prominently displayed. Currently, this feature does not appear to be available on standard smartphones or desktop devices, indicating a targeted rollout.

For those eager to experiment with this new functionality, accessing Google Search on a large-screen mobile device and tapping the color palette icon located in the top-left corner will unveil the available options. However, it’s worth noting that the rollout seems to be selective; for instance, the feature was not accessible on our Oppo Find N5 foldable, despite being visible to the publication.

While the timeline for a broader release remains uncertain, the testing phase on large-screen devices suggests that wider availability could be on the horizon. Furthermore, there is speculation that Google may integrate this feature with Android’s Material 3 Expressive design, potentially allowing system colors to be automatically applied to the Search interface in the future.
