Report: Sony Is Turning Its Back on Porting PlayStation Games to PC

In recent years, PC gamers have enjoyed a feast of options, benefiting from Steam’s enticingly low prices while also gaining access to Sony’s acclaimed first-party titles—albeit with a slight delay of about a year. However, a new report suggests a significant shift in this trend, potentially impacting even those games that have already made their debut on the PS5.

Don’t Expect Ghost of Yotei and Saros to Appear on PC Anytime Soon

According to a report by Jason Schreier of Bloomberg, Sony Corp. has revised its strategy and will no longer pursue the release of its major PS5 titles on PC. This marks a notable departure from the previous approach, where nearly every major AAA release on the PS5 found its way to PC a few months later.

Sources familiar with Sony’s plans indicate that while online titles like Marathon and Marvel Tokon will continue to be available across multiple platforms, the highly sought-after single-player experiences from Sony’s first-party studios will remain exclusive to the PlayStation ecosystem. Notably, Ghost of Yotei and the forthcoming Saros from Housemarque are confirmed to be PS5 exclusives, with plans for their PC ports reportedly shelved.

Interestingly, games developed by external studios but published by PlayStation, such as Death Stranding 2: On the Beach and the anticipated Kena: Scars of Kosmora, are still slated for PC release later this year. This distinction highlights a nuanced approach to Sony’s game distribution strategy.

The reasons behind this strategic pivot appear multifaceted. Reports suggest that PlayStation titles have not performed as well on PC as anticipated. Additionally, there is a faction within PlayStation that raises concerns about the potential risks of releasing console-exclusive games on PC, fearing it could undermine the brand and negatively impact PS5 sales and future console iterations.

For the time being, Sony seems to be adopting a more traditional approach, focusing on console exclusivity. While this information remains unofficial, Schreier’s credibility lends weight to these developments. As of now, Sony has opted not to comment on the report, but any official updates will be communicated to readers promptly.

In the meantime, for those looking to enhance their gaming library without breaking the bank, the ongoing Dealmania sale on the PSN Store presents an excellent opportunity.
