Google just made my favorite Phone app feature even better. Here’s how to use it

Last August, the Google Phone app introduced a feature that quickly captured the attention of customization enthusiasts: Calling Cards. This innovative tool allows users to craft a personalized screen that appears whenever a contact calls, showcasing a full-screen photo and custom text. However, until recently, these Calling Cards were limited to individual use, visible only to the creator. An update on March 3 has transformed this feature, enabling users to create Calling Cards that can be seen by those they call.

How to create your own Calling Card

Getting started with your personal Calling Card is a straightforward process. Upon opening the Google Phone app, a pop-up should appear, inviting you to “Create your calling card.” Simply tap the Get started button to begin. If the pop-up does not appear, you can manually navigate to your Calling Card settings by following these steps:

  1. Tap the three lines in the top-left corner.
  2. Select Settings.
  3. Scroll to the bottom of the page.
  4. Choose Calling card.
  5. Under “Your calling card,” tap Create.

After linking your Calling Card to your preferred Google profile, the creative process begins. You’ll need to select a photo for your Calling Card, which can be done in three ways: using the Camera, selecting from your Gallery, or choosing from Google Photos. Once you’ve picked a photo, you can adjust its position and zoom to achieve the perfect look.

At the bottom of the screen, customization tools await. The first row presents various font options, while the second row offers a palette of colors. The initial font option allows for detailed adjustments in width, weight, and roundness. You can preview your Calling Card in full-screen mode at any time by tapping on it. When satisfied with your design, tap Done in the top-right corner. The subsequent page will display a preview of your card along with sharing options. By default, your Calling Card is only visible to your contacts, but you can choose to share it with everyone you call by adjusting the settings. Once finalized, tap Done at the bottom of the screen.

Congratulations! You have successfully created your own Calling Card. Should you wish to modify your design or sharing preferences, you can revisit the Calling Card settings in the Phone app at any time.

What to do if you don’t have the Calling Card update

The rollout of personal Calling Cards began on March 3, but as is often the case with Google updates, access may be staggered across devices. If you find that your Android phone does not yet support Calling Cards, it’s advisable to check the Google Play Store to ensure your Google Phone app is updated to the latest version. If your app is current and you still lack access, patience may be required as Google completes the server-side rollout.
