Rediscovering World of Warcraft from the Couch
After a hiatus from the subscription model, the recent launch of Midnight has rekindled my passion for World of Warcraft. As a remote worker, the end of my workday often leaves me yearning for an escape from my desk setup—an urge that can inadvertently diminish my prime gaming hours as a dwarf shaman.
However, a delightful convergence of factors has transformed my gaming experience. Blizzard’s gradual rollout of controller support, the dedicated efforts of gamepad-focused addon developers, and the marvels of low-latency game streaming have allowed me to indulge in what once seemed a distant dream during my preteen days of Vanilla WoW: playing World of Warcraft with a controller while comfortably nestled on my couch. And to my surprise, it works exceptionally well.
The key to this seamless experience lies in ConsolePort, crafted by the talented creator Munk. This addon enhances the basic gamepad functionality that Blizzard has been exploring since 2020, offering a comprehensive, gamepad-centric user experience. In the gameplay clip I’ve shared, my traditional MMO action bar has been transformed into clusters of abilities reminiscent of Final Fantasy XIV, all conveniently mapped to my gamepad buttons.
With this setup, I’ve encountered remarkably few obstacles, allowing me to almost convince myself that I am playing the game as it was intended. Admittedly, the notion of using a controller for such a classic MMORPG may be met with skepticism by some—several colleagues have already expressed their disapproval. Yet, amidst all the times I’ve been deemed unfit for civil society, this particular gaming experience has proven to be one of the most enjoyable. Plus, it has made it significantly more challenging to engage with the often contentious discussions in trade chat. What more could one desire from their gaming escapades?
