In an exciting development for fans of the beloved gaming franchise, Kirsten Dunst is set to join the cast of A Minecraft Movie 2 as the character Alex. This news comes after Dunst hinted at her interest in a sequel during an interview last year, expressing enthusiasm partly due to her children’s enjoyment of the first film.
Details on the Sequel
According to Deadline, Dunst has officially signed on with Warner Bros. and Legendary Pictures for the project, which is currently shrouded in mystery regarding its plot and official title. The sequel is slated for release on July 23, 2027.
Dunst, known for her roles in Spider-Man and Civil War, as well as the classic Jumanji, is expected to bring her unique flair to the character of Alex. Although she was absent from the main events of the first film, her brief post-credits cameo left fans eager for her return.
During her previous conversation with Town & Country, Dunst remarked on the financial benefits of participating in such projects, humorously stating, “Maybe I can just make a movie where I don’t lose money?” This sentiment resonates with many actors navigating the balance between passion projects and financial viability.
Returning to helm the sequel is original director Jared Hess, with Chris Galletta back to write the script. Familiar voices will also return, including Jack Black as Steve, alongside Jason Momoa (Garrett), Danielle Brooks (Dawn), Matt Berry (Nitwit), and Jennifer Coolidge (Marlene).
The announcement of A Minecraft Movie 2 came in October 2025, following the first film’s impressive box office performance, which grossed over 0 million globally. Despite narrowly missing the billion mark, the film’s success made a sequel a logical next step for the franchise.
With more than a year until its release, anticipation is already building among fans. If the sequel mirrors the chaos and creativity of its predecessor, audiences can expect a thrilling cinematic experience when it finally hits theaters. In the meantime, fans are encouraged to revisit the original film and stay tuned for further updates.
