Resilience in the Gaming Landscape
In the midst of a challenging period for the gaming industry, characterized by significant layoffs and studio closures, a few dedicated teams continue to thrive by focusing on niche markets. One such studio is Mohawk Games, established in 2013 by former Firaxis developers. This small yet passionate team is preparing to launch new downloadable content (DLC) for their acclaimed 2021 grand strategy game, Old World.
Co-founder Soren Johnson shared insights at the recent Game Developers Conference (GDC), revealing that the revenue generated from Old World has been sufficient to sustain their operations. The studio has intentionally kept its size modest, employing just 15 individuals who are committed to crafting quality gaming experiences.
The upcoming expansion, titled Empires of the Indus, will transport players to the Indian subcontinent, introducing three new civilizations to the grand strategy gameplay. Scheduled for release on March 30, this expansion promises to enrich the already immersive world of Old World.
Johnson, who previously led the design of Civilization IV, expressed his desire to explore creative avenues beyond grand strategy. He has long harbored ambitions to develop a light tactical RPG and is intrigued by narrative-driven games, citing Inkle’s 80 Days as an example of the type of storytelling he admires. While there are no immediate announcements regarding new projects, Johnson maintains a comprehensive list of game ideas that excite him.
Although Mohawk Games may take its time to venture into new territories, Johnson remains optimistic about the studio’s future. He envisions a long-lasting journey for the team, stating his hope to continue working as long as they find joy in their craft.
