Gemini Live redesign replaces fullscreen interface on Android

Gemini Live, the innovative feature within Google’s ecosystem, is undergoing a notable transformation as the tech giant tests a redesign aimed at enhancing user experience on Android devices. While the visual elements of Gemini Live have largely remained consistent since its inception, this new approach marks a significant shift in how users will interact with the platform.

In this redesign, Gemini Live will no longer occupy the entire screen. Instead, it will seamlessly integrate into the Gemini app’s homepage, creating a more cohesive experience. The top bar will be updated to read “Live with Gemini,” accompanied by the addition of a transcript button, making it easier for users to follow along with discussions.

At the bottom of the interface, the traditional prompt box has been replaced by a sleek, pill-shaped container that showcases a blue waveform. This design choice not only modernizes the look but also enhances functionality. Users can now share their camera or screen from the left side, while the right side offers a convenient option to mute the microphone. Exiting Gemini Live is straightforward, with the keyboard icon providing a quick escape, or users can simply utilize the system back gesture.

Previously, Google had experimented with a more minimalist design, featuring only camera sharing and the keyboard icon, with the muting function hidden behind a double-tap gesture on the waveform. The current redesign, however, opts for a more intuitive layout that prioritizes accessibility and ease of use.

Beta users of the Google app (version 17.14) are beginning to see this redesign, which is currently exclusive to the Gemini app. The overlay remains unchanged for now, but plans are in place for it to adopt a similar aesthetic to the in-app experience in the near future.

This decision to remove the fullscreen interface is intriguing, especially considering its iconic status and the consistency it has provided since launch. While the previous design was visually striking, the new layout aims to foster a more user-friendly environment, aligning with contemporary design trends and user expectations.
