Beta Patch Notes Reveal Exciting Changes for Slay the Spire 2
Developer Megacrit has unveiled a fresh set of beta patch notes for Slay the Spire 2, and the community is abuzz with anticipation. Among the highlights is a focused effort to refine the Ascension difficulty scaling, addressing ongoing discussions since the game’s launch. The studio aims to create a clearer distinction between Ascension levels A0 and A10, enhancing the overall gameplay experience.
In the patch notes, co-head Antony Giovannetti candidly acknowledges that the current base difficulty of Slay the Spire 2 is “quite hard.” With a vision of approachability in mind, the team is keen on reaching a wider audience while still preserving a challenging late-game experience. To this end, several adjustments have been made: the Scrolls of Biting, Owl Magistrate, and Slimed Berserker now feature reduced HP at lower Ascensions, while becoming more formidable at higher levels. Additionally, the Vantom Act 1 boss has been nerfed for easier runs, and the Waterfall Giant elite heals less during low-difficulty encounters. These incremental changes are part of a broader strategy to gradually enhance the Ascension gap, with further adjustments expected as the development roadmap unfolds.
Despite recent redesigns, players continue to grapple with Doormaker, one of the Act 3 bosses. Giovannetti notes that Megacrit is “currently monitoring” the situation but is hesitant to implement further changes. “We want to give players time to adjust a bit,” he explains, emphasizing the importance of avoiding knee-jerk reactions. Statistically, Doormaker is performing well, but the experiential aspect remains a critical consideration. The studio is committed to ensuring that various playstyles can coexist without friction, leaving the door open for potential future modifications.
Now, let’s delve into the card changes. The latest patch introduces stunning new artwork for cards like Feral, Hailstorm, and Voltaic, but the updates extend beyond aesthetics. Previously overlooked cards such as Conflagration and Drum of Battle for Ironclad have received significant reworks. Conflagration now inflicts two damage to all enemies four times at base (five when upgraded), making it a compelling option for Strength builds. Drum of Battle has transitioned from a zero-cost power to a one-cost skill that generates two energy (three when upgraded) upon exhaustion, making it a strategic asset for exhaust setups.
Ironclad isn’t alone in receiving attention; Regent’s Parry has also been adjusted to better align with Dexterity and Frail mechanics. Previously, playing the Sovereign Blade granted ten block (14 when upgraded), but now the blade itself gains the same amount of defenses. This change raises questions about its effectiveness, as Regent may not fully utilize Dexterity, potentially rendering it a nerf. However, adjustments could be forthcoming if the card proves underwhelming.
Turning to Neow’s blessings, while some like Silver Crucible and Leafy Poultice shine, others such as Booming Conch and Neow’s Fury have been less appealing. Booming Conch now provides additional energy alongside drawing two extra cards at the start of an elite encounter, enhancing its utility. Neow’s Fury stands out as a significant improvement, allowing players to choose two cards from the discard pile instead of relying on randomness, effectively transforming it into a more powerful version of Graveblast.
In the Ancients category, Tezcatara’s Nutritious Soup relic has also received a buff, now granting Strikes an additional three damage while making them cost nothing and providing Eternal status. This enhancement solidifies its value, particularly for Ironclad players looking to streamline their decks.
The patch notes also include various smaller card balance changes, user interface enhancements, and the customary bug fixes typical of a game in beta. Overall, this update is a delightful addition, particularly for fans of Ironclad. As players explore the new possibilities, it’s advisable to prioritize upgrading True Grit if venturing down the Exhaust path—your future self will surely appreciate it.
