Microsoft Starts Rolling Out New “Experimental” Windows Insider Channel

Microsoft has embarked on a significant transition within its Windows Insider program, initiating the rollout of the newly announced Experimental Windows Insider channel. This strategic move, which was unveiled earlier this month, marks a pivotal shift in how users will engage with upcoming builds.

Phased Rollout of Experimental Channel

As the first phase of this rollout, users currently in the Dev Channel will be migrated to the Experimental Channel, where they will continue to receive updates from the 26300 series builds. Over the next few weeks, the company plans to transition Canary testers using the 28000 series builds to the Experimental (26H1) Channel, while those on the 29500 series will be redirected to the Experimental (Future Platforms) Channel.

The Windows Insider team has emphasized the importance of quality and reliability in this process, stating, “To ensure quality and reliability of the program changes, we will be rolling out the changes in a phased approach.” This careful strategy aims to facilitate a smooth transition for users as they adapt to the new structure.

For those in the Dev Channel, the latest build, 26300.8289, is now available for download. This update introduces several enhancements, including improved Windows Update functionalities. Notably, users will find new options that allow them to skip updates during the out-of-the-box experience (OOBE) and extend update pauses as needed.

Dev Channel testers who do not see the new “Experimental Channel” option after updating can easily enable it by navigating to Settings > Windows Update > Windows Insider Program > Feature flags. This section will also provide users with the ability to toggle specific features on or off at their discretion.

Future Platforms and New Features

The Experimental Channel is set to introduce a Future Platforms option in Windows Update, enabling Insiders to switch between 26H1 builds and future platform builds seamlessly.

For those on the Canary Channel, the 26H1 build 28200.1873 is currently available for testers running the 28000 series builds. This update brings a rebranding of the Xbox full-screen experience to “Xbox mode” and enhances the Touch Keyboard experience by eliminating the previous full-screen overlay during Voice Typing.

Additionally, for Canary testers already utilizing the 29500 series builds, the build 29576.1000 is now accessible. This update features a redesigned volume slider, introduces new NPU usage metrics in Task Manager, and adds a Point-in-time restore option within the Troubleshoot menu of the Windows Recovery Environment.

Lastly, Beta Channel Insiders can now download build 26200.8283, which includes minor adjustments to the Start Menu and print drivers. However, the new Beta experience, which eliminates Controlled Feature Rollouts, will not be immediately available to Beta testers.
