As the highly anticipated launch of Grand Theft Auto 6 approaches later this year, it has been confirmed that the game will not be available on PC at launch. Instead, players will need to access the game exclusively through PS5 and Xbox Series X/S consoles. This decision, long hinted at by Rockstar Games, raises eyebrows given the recent surge in PC gaming popularity. The rationale behind this choice has been elaborated upon by Strauss Zelnick, CEO of Take-Two Interactive, the parent company of Rockstar.

In a discussion with Bloomberg, Zelnick articulated the strategic reasoning behind prioritizing console releases. He emphasized that Rockstar has historically viewed console gamers as its “core” audience. According to Zelnick, the company believes that if it cannot adequately cater to this primary group, it would be unwise to extend its offerings to other platforms where the experience might not meet the high standards expected by its dedicated fanbase.
“Rockstar always starts on console because I think with regard to a release like that you’re judged by serving the core,” Zelnick stated. “If your core consumer isn’t there, if they’re not served first and best, you kind of don’t hit your other consumers.”
While Zelnick did not confirm or deny the possibility of a future PC release for GTA 6, history suggests that a port is likely. Previous titles such as Grand Theft Auto 5 and Red Dead Redemption 2 made their way to PC several years after their initial console launches. Given the current landscape of gaming, it is plausible that Rockstar may consider reducing the time gap between console and PC releases for this installment.
With a release date set for November 19th, excitement is building. Rockstar has indicated that a marketing campaign will commence this summer, promising fans a glimpse of GTA 6 in action in the coming months.
