Google is hitting pause on the Fitbit app’s social features

In a significant shift for users of the Fitbit app, Google has announced that social features will be temporarily suspended as the app transitions to the Google Health platform. This change, while perhaps not the most critical aspect of the app, affects a core component of user engagement—sharing achievements and competing with friends.

As of today, users will find themselves unable to send messages, view leaderboards, or manage their friends list. This pause is part of a broader effort to ensure a seamless migration to the new Google Health app, which is expected to roll out to all eligible users by May 26. During this transition, Google aims to enhance the overall user experience, introducing improved sleep algorithms and a more personalized health coaching feature.

Changes to Social Features

Once users transition to the Google Health app, they can anticipate a revamped social experience, complete with updated leaderboard options. However, several changes will accompany this new social profile:

  • Your friends will see an updated social profile that includes your name, email address, and profile picture linked to your Google Account. Users will need to approve sharing this information upon their first login to the Google Health app.
  • Customization options will be limited; users will not be able to select a unique username or custom photo, although they can still update their Google Account details.
  • Privacy settings related to sharing personal information such as sex, height, weight, and location will no longer be available, and these details will not be included in the social profile.
  • The ability to send and receive direct messages and notifications will be eliminated.
  • Features such as Groups and Community Feed will be removed entirely.
  • Kid accounts will not have the option to add friends.

For those still logging in with a Fitbit account, it’s important to note that friends will need to be re-added in the Google Health app post-transition.

While the social features may not be the primary draw for all users, their absence will be felt by those who enjoy the camaraderie and motivation that comes from sharing fitness journeys with friends. As the community awaits the new offerings, it remains to be seen which features will resonate most in this evolving landscape of health and wellness technology.
