Reflections on Overwatch’s Tenth Anniversary Celebration
As Overwatch marks a decade of its existence, the anniversary event has sparked mixed feelings among its dedicated player base. Following a significant revival earlier this year, the game had regained its footing in the competitive multiplayer arena, introducing new heroes and a series of proactive updates that reinvigorated the community. However, the tenth anniversary has not quite lived up to the expectations set by this recent resurgence.
The offerings for this milestone celebration have been modest at best, featuring a basic assortment of character skins, a limited number of loot boxes, and a few community-created cosmetics. The ‘launch hero skins’ presented are a collection of purple-and-white recolors that many players find simplistic and, at times, a bit flashy—certainly not comparable to the more elaborate cosmetics available for purchase. With a total of 15 anniversary loot boxes, including up to six containing legendary skins, the event fails to encapsulate the significance of a ten-year journey.
Game Director Aaron Keller has acknowledged the community’s disappointment, stating, “We’ve been reading and watching reactions to the anniversary event this week, and they’re fair.” He recognizes the importance of this milestone and expresses a desire for the entire year to feel like a celebration of Overwatch. Keller reassures players that while the current anniversary event is a standalone occurrence, the team is committed to delivering engaging content throughout the year.
Looking ahead, Keller has shared plans for an additional season-long event in Season 3, which promises more rewards and an expansion of the earnable rewards in the weekly Play N Games tracker. He emphasizes that while these future rewards may not enhance the current event, they reflect a broader vision for the year.
In response to the feedback, Blizzard is increasing the rewards for the ongoing anniversary festivities. For the second and third weeks of the event, the number of community loot boxes will see a significant boost—doubling in week two and tripling in week three. Additionally, the total number of games required to earn all 15 anniversary loot boxes has been reduced to 60, with wins counting as double. Notably, during week three, all players will receive a special ten-year anniversary loot box containing four guaranteed legendary skins.
This adjustment raises the total count of legendary skins to ten, although the absence of mythic skins remains a point of contention, especially when compared to the more generous offerings in the Chinese anniversary event, which includes mythic skins through login bonuses and access to older cosmetics from past battle passes. Many long-time players reminisce about previous anniversary events that temporarily made all old skins available, a feature that is sorely missed this year.
Keller has also indicated that the rewards for the anniversary celebration can extend beyond loot boxes, promising further details on additional elements as they develop. He expresses gratitude for the community’s passion and feedback, emphasizing the importance of player engagement over the past decade.
With the strong momentum Overwatch has built this year, there remains hope that Blizzard will fulfill its promise of transforming this anniversary into a more extensive celebration, allowing players to move past the current offerings and fully embrace the game they have cherished for so long.
