Microsoft has issued a service alert regarding potential complications for customers operating within restricted network environments following the installation of the January 2026 optional non-security preview updates. These environments, which can include fully isolated or air-gapped systems as well as strictly firewalled networks, may experience Windows Update failures, specifically displaying error code 0x80010002 during update attempts.
Understanding the Update Challenges
The company noted that while affected devices might successfully download the February monthly Windows security update, they could subsequently face difficulties accessing Windows Update settings for updates released in March, April, or beyond. This issue stems from recent modifications to download timeout requirements during the initiation of download operations. Importantly, it does not pertain to the integrity of the device or its capacity to install updates; rather, it relates solely to the ability to download updates from the internet via the Windows Update interface.
In light of this ongoing issue, Microsoft is actively working on a resolution. Meanwhile, IT administrators have the option to implement a workaround by utilizing Known Issue Rollback (KIR), a feature designed to reverse problematic updates delivered through Windows Update. To effectively address the issue, administrators are advised to install and configure the appropriate Group Policy for their specific version of Windows. A device restart will be necessary to apply the group policy settings.
For further assistance, administrators can access detailed guidance on deploying and configuring KIR group policies through Microsoft’s support website.
Historical Context of Update Issues
This is not the first time that IT administrators have faced challenges when installing Windows updates. In April 2025, Microsoft rectified a bug that hindered enterprise customers from successfully installing the April 2025 security updates via Windows Server Update Services (WSUS). Additionally, a similar issue was resolved in August 2025, which caused the Windows 11 24H2 cumulative update to fail with error code 0x80240069 when delivered through WSUS.
More recently, Microsoft provided another KIR fix addressing a known issue that resulted in the failure of the May 2026 Windows 11 security update (KB5089549) on certain systems, leading to the appearance of error code 0x800f0922.
