Quantic Dream’s Spellcasters Chronicles Faces Early Closure

In a turn of events that many industry observers anticipated, Quantic Dream has announced the discontinuation of its multiplayer online battle arena (MOBA), Spellcasters Chronicles, just three months after its launch. The studio cited that the game “has not reached the audience needed to ensure its long-term sustainability,” prompting a halt in development and likely leading to layoffs within the team.

In a statement shared on Steam, Quantic Dream reflected on the ambitious nature of Spellcasters Chronicles, stating, “With this project, our teams set out to explore new creative territories and create a bold, original multiplayer experience.” The game was intended to showcase the studio’s innovative spirit, drawing on the talent and dedication of its creators.

However, the decision to pivot from narrative-driven titles like Fahrenheit and Detroit: Become Human to a MOBA format raised eyebrows. The timing of the release also seemed less than fortuitous, coinciding with major gaming events such as the Marathon server slam and the Steam Next Fest, which inundated players with a plethora of new demos and experiences.

Despite initial enthusiasm, player engagement dwindled significantly. Spellcasters Chronicles recorded a peak concurrent player count of only 888 at launch, a figure that quickly diminished to a mere handful of active users. For a free-to-play model reliant on in-game purchases, such numbers are unsustainable.

Quantic Dream’s mention of an “internal reorganization” hints at the difficult decisions ahead, as the studio prepares to navigate the fallout from this closure. Nevertheless, the development of Star Wars Eclipse, a project in the works since 2021, will continue unaffected by these changes.

Players will have the opportunity to enjoy Spellcasters Chronicles until June 19, when the servers will be permanently shut down. In a gesture of goodwill, Quantic Dream has announced that all expenditures made during the early access phase will be eligible for refunds upon request, with further details to be communicated through the game’s social media channels and Discord in the coming days.
