Microsoft continues to refine its integration of the Copilot AI within the Windows 11 operating system, demonstrating a commitment to making this AI companion a central feature of the desktop experience. A recent update, which is being rolled out gradually, reintroduces Copilot as a sidebar application, reminiscent of its initial design showcased back in 2024.
Initially launched as a standalone application, Copilot has undergone several transformations. The latest iteration allows users to dock Copilot as a sidebar, effectively pushing other applications aside to enhance visibility and promote productivity. This sidebar can be positioned on either the left or right side of the screen, catering to individual user preferences. In response to this new layout, Windows 11’s user interface automatically adjusts, resizing and repositioning desktop applications to accommodate the sidebar.
Return to Original Design
For those familiar with the evolution of Copilot, the return to a sidebar format marks a significant shift back to its original concept. The redesigned Copilot is now more seamlessly integrated with the desktop’s context menus, applications, icons, and various UI elements within Windows 11. This renewed focus on integration aims to enhance user interaction and accessibility.
In addition to the design changes, Microsoft has also introduced two distinct methods for users wishing to remove the Copilot application. The first method involves a Windows Registry edit, which provides a straightforward approach for those comfortable with system modifications. Users can access the Registry Editor and navigate to the following path:
- HKEYCURRENTUSERSoftwarePoliciesMicrosoftWindows
From there, users can right-click on the Windows key, select New > Key, and create a new key named WindowsAI. Next, they should navigate to the newly created key and right-click on the right side to select New > DWORD (32-bit). Naming this entry RemoveMicrosoftCopilotApp and setting its value to one (1) will instruct Windows to remove the Copilot AI app and its associated elements, with changes taking effect after a restart.
The second method for removal utilizes a group policy setting. Users can navigate to User Configuration > Administrative Templates > Windows Components > Windows AI to remove the Microsoft Copilot App. However, this option is only applicable if the application was not installed by the user themselves.
