A recent HP laptop BIOS bug is leaving high-end Windows 11 PCs stuck in an endless BitLocker recovery loop

For owners of HP laptops, particularly those with high-end models such as the EliteBooks, ProBooks, and ZBook workstations, a recent BIOS firmware update delivered via Windows Update has raised concerns. Users may experience significant issues, including system freezes during boot or the dreaded Blue Screen of Death, which can render devices inoperable until a resolution is found.

HP’s Response to BIOS Update Issues

Earlier this week, HP acknowledged the situation, stating it is “aware of purported BIOS issues and is looking into the matter.” A newly released support document, highlighted by Windows Latest, provides further insight into the problem. It notes that “Microsoft’s 2023 certificates may fail to properly apply on the computer when this BitLocker issue occurs.” To assess the status of this process, users are advised to check the UEFICA2023Status and UEFICA2023Error registry values. If the UEFICA2023Status remains in an “In Progress” state for an extended period and the UEFICA2023Error shows any value greater than 0, it indicates that the update process has not succeeded.

While HP is diligently working on a permanent fix, the immediate recommendation is to take a proactive approach. Users should consider disabling automatic updates in the Windows Update settings to prevent the problematic BIOS update from being downloaded and installed.

In the meantime, HP has also outlined a manual workaround to address the BitLocker Recovery loop, which will facilitate the successful application of the 2023 Microsoft certificates on affected computers. For those who have already installed the update, reverting to a previously stable version is an option, albeit one that may come with its own set of challenges. Some users have reported success with this process, particularly through the network BIOS downgrade functionality, although it requires the use of an HP USB-C to Ethernet dongle.
