Meta’s suite of platforms, which includes Facebook, Instagram, Messenger, and WhatsApp, experienced significant service disruptions on Friday, impacting users across various countries. Both personal and business users felt the effects, with Facebook Ads Manager also facing challenges during this period.

The disruptions appeared to commence around 7 PM IST, as outage-tracking website Downdetector noted a sharp increase in user complaints. Reports of similar issues emerged from multiple countries around the same time, indicating a global phenomenon. In India, users in various cities reported difficulties accessing Meta’s platforms.

Meta responded to the situation through a post on X by spokesperson Andy Stone, who acknowledged the issues: “We’re aware people are currently having trouble accessing our services. We’re working on it.”

As complaints surged in both India and the United States, users struggled to access feeds, send messages, and utilize mobile applications. Facebook and Instagram bore the brunt of the complaints, while Messenger also saw a notable uptick in reports. Although WhatsApp was less affected, users still encountered problems with app access, logins, and website functionality.

During the peak of the disruption in the United States, Facebook recorded over 109,000 user reports, with Instagram and Messenger also experiencing significant spikes. In India, Instagram led the charge in outage reports among Meta’s services, followed closely by Facebook.

Meta’s business systems dashboard indicated high levels of disruption affecting Facebook Ads Manager, Messenger API, the Messenger platform, and the WhatsApp Business Platform throughout the outage.

As complaints proliferated across social media, many users expressed frustration over being unexpectedly logged out of their accounts or facing difficulties logging back in. Others reported challenges in loading feeds and accessing various platform features.

In a subsequent update, Stone reassured users that recovery efforts were underway: “We’re coming back, though it may take a bit of time for everything to be fully back to normal.”

As the number of outage reports began to decline, signs of recovery became evident across Facebook, Instagram, and Messenger, although some users continued to experience disruptions. At the time of publication, Meta had not disclosed the cause of the outage.
