Windows Insiders Are Getting Big Windows 11 In-Box App Updates

Microsoft is taking a significant step in enhancing transparency with its Windows 11 in-box app updates by documenting these changes through the Windows Insider Program. This initiative is designed to provide users with insights into the latest enhancements before they are rolled out to the broader public.

Latest App Updates

Users can now explore detailed descriptions of the most recent updates to several key applications, including Calculator, Camera, Clock, Media Player, Paint, Photos, and Sound Recorder. These updates can be found on the Windows Insider Documentation Hub, accessible via the Microsoft Learn website. To locate the information, simply expand the “Release notes for apps” section in the navigation bar on the left.

Among the notable changes currently available in the Experimental, Experimental (26H1), and Experimental (Future Platforms) channels are:

  • Calculator: Enhanced accuracy for square-root results, improved readability in high-contrast themes, a fixed layout for right-to-left languages, and various reliability updates.
  • Camera: Improvements to the zoom slider, enhanced front camera support, additional video resolution options, better QR link functionality, and more intuitive default settings.
  • Clock: A wealth of new features, including timer enhancements, the option to disable the daily goal in Focus mode, a new 15-minute snooze feature, and much more.
  • Media Player: Custom captions, an indexing banner in the play queue, playlist enhancements, bug fixes, and improved reliability.
  • Paint: A comprehensive list of updates, featuring a more responsive toolbar, adjustable eraser transparency, refined stamp brush strokes, selection improvements, and overall performance enhancements.
  • Photos: Introduction of AI watermarking, improvements for viewing small images and pixel art, enhancements for scanned text, a fix for a crash bug, and streamlined keyboard navigation.
  • Sound Recorder: A live waveform display for Bluetooth microphones, simplified deletion processes, bug fixes, and additional enhancements.

While the timeline for these app updates and other significant changes to Windows 11—such as those affecting the Start menu, Taskbar, and Widgets—remains uncertain, it is anticipated that app updates will be deployed more swiftly than system updates. Consequently, users can expect these enhancements to be available in the near future, along with the promise of more updates from the Insider Program on the horizon.
