On Friday evening, June 12, users around the globe faced significant disruptions on Facebook and Messenger, with reports of issues emerging around 7:45 PM Bangladesh time. Desktop users attempting to access Facebook encountered an error message stating, “Sorry, something went wrong. We’re working on it, and we’ll get it fixed as soon as we can.” Meanwhile, the mobile app remained frozen on previously loaded pages, leaving many in a state of uncertainty.
Users attempting to log into Messenger found themselves unexpectedly logged out, greeted by an “Unable to log in” message upon trying to reconnect. Initially, it appeared that Meta’s other platforms, including WhatsApp and Instagram, were functioning normally. However, as the situation unfolded, it became evident that Instagram and Threads were also experiencing disruptions, indicating a wider outage across Meta’s services. While the WhatsApp mobile app seemed operational, reports indicated that its web version was down for many users.
Impact on Outage Monitoring Platforms
As the situation escalated, outage monitoring platforms such as Downdetector and Is It Down Right Now faced their own challenges, becoming inaccessible due to a surge of users seeking updates on Facebook’s status. At this point, Meta, the parent company of Facebook, WhatsApp, and Instagram, had yet to release an official statement addressing the cause of the outage or providing an estimated timeline for resolution.
Interestingly, another social media platform, Snapchat, was also reported to be experiencing downtime during this period. By 8:18 PM Bangladesh time, some local users began reporting regained access to both the web and app versions of Facebook and Messenger, although lingering issues such as difficulties refreshing timelines and persistent lags were still prevalent.
Restoration and User Reports
According to the latest updates from Downdetector, services for Facebook began to be restored around 8:19 PM Bangladesh time, based on user feedback. The peak of reported outages occurred at 7:49 PM, with 2,738 complaints logged, while the first reports had started coming in at 7:34 PM, totaling 1,526 complaints. By 9:23 PM, approximately 222 reports were still being documented on Downdetector. In the United States, the peak reached an astonishing 113,843 reports at around 7:55 PM regarding the Facebook outage.
As the evening progressed, users worldwide began reporting that Facebook, Messenger, and WhatsApp were once again accessible. Instagram, too, had largely returned to normal functionality, although some users continued to encounter sporadic issues.
