Google’s initiative to enhance the safety of app sideloading for Android users is set to unfold over the coming months, following the announcement of its Android developer verification program last year. This program aims to provide a more secure environment for users who wish to install applications from developers outside the official channels.
Upcoming Changes to Sideloading
Beginning this month, Google will initiate the rollout of a new system service that will be automatically installed on the majority of Android devices. This service will play a crucial role in verifying developer registrations later in the year.
In July, the company plans to introduce the Android Developer ID Status API on a global scale, alongside early access to the Android Developer Console API. This will also include the launch of limited distribution accounts within the Android Developer Console. These accounts are designed for students, hobbyists, and learners, allowing them to share apps with up to 20 devices without the need for a government-issued ID or any associated fees.
August will see the global launch of limited distribution accounts and the new Android Developer Console API. Additionally, an advanced flow will be introduced for power users, facilitating the installation of apps from unverified developers.
By September 30, the new developer verification protections will officially come into effect, starting with Brazil, Indonesia, Singapore, and Thailand. App registration will be mandated for participating app stores, which include Google’s Play Store, Honor App Market, Oppo App Market, Galaxy Store, V-Appstore, Palm Store, and GetApps.
For those who wish to sideload unregistered apps, options will remain available through Android Debug Bridge (ADB) or the advanced flow introduced earlier.
Looking ahead to 2027, Google plans to expand the Android developer verification requirement globally, taking into account feedback from partners, users, and the developer community.
For developers distributing apps in Brazil, Indonesia, Singapore, or Thailand through the aforementioned app stores, completing the verification process by September will be essential.
