Gemini App Enhances User Experience with Google Play Store Integration

In a significant development announced at I/O 2026, the Gemini app for Android has officially integrated with the Google Play Store, marking a new era of seamless app discovery and interaction.

This innovative “connected app” feature allows users to engage in conversational browsing of the Play Store, making it easier than ever to locate Android applications and games tailored to their needs. Users can now pose a variety of prompts to Gemini, such as:

  • What are some meditation apps?
  • Recommend a good map app for my phone to download while I’m traveling internationally.
  • Can you recommend an app that will show me what fish I can expect to see in my upcoming scuba dive trip?
  • I’ve been into the blurry, vintage film look on social media – what app can I use to get that 90s disposable camera aesthetic for my photos?
  • Find a productivity app to help me with meal planning.

Upon receiving these queries, Gemini responds with curated results that include a Play Store card displaying essential information such as ratings, download counts, and a direct link to “View more in Google Play.” Users can easily tap on an app to slide up the listing and initiate the installation process.

In instances where a traditional Gemini response is provided, users have the option to follow up with commands like “Install [app name]” or “Download [game name]” to access the Play Store card directly.

Moreover, this integration extends beyond mere app recommendations. Users can also utilize Gemini to search for and purchase in-app digital items, subscriptions, or even digital gift cards. This feature, which was introduced last year, allows for commands such as:

  • Purchase [in-app item] for [game name].
  • Buy [store name] gift card.
  • Show me in-app purchases for [app name].

It is important to note that Gemini can only recommend in-app items for applications that are already installed on the user’s device. While not all apps currently support purchases through this connected feature, Google is actively expanding the list of compatible applications.

To activate the Google Play connected app, users simply need to enter one of the aforementioned prompts, after which Gemini will guide them through the process of linking to the Play Store. As this integration continues to roll out, it may not yet be available on all devices.
