On Wednesday, Microsoft made a significant announcement regarding its Windows operating systems. In a message shared through its support channels, the tech giant revealed that systems running Windows 10 Enterprise LTSB 2016, as well as the Home and Pro editions of Windows 11 24H2, will cease to receive updates in three months.
Support Timeline and Recommendations
While the impending end of updates may raise concerns for some users, Microsoft clarified that the Enterprise and Education editions will continue to enjoy mainstream support until October 12, 2027. This assurance provides a buffer for organizations utilizing these versions, allowing them to plan their transitions effectively.
According to Microsoft, “On October 13, 2026, Windows 11, version 24H2 Home and Pro editions, and Windows 10 Enterprise LTSB 2016 will reach end of updates.” This means that devices operating on these editions will no longer receive monthly updates, which include vital security and non-security enhancements designed to protect against emerging threats.
To ensure continued security and functionality, customers are encouraged to upgrade to Windows 11 25H2, also referred to as the Windows 11 2025 Update. This version became generally available in September 2024 and can be installed on version 24H2 through an enablement package.
For users of Windows 11 24H2 Home and Pro who are not managed by IT departments, the transition to Windows 11 25H2 will occur automatically. However, these users retain the flexibility to postpone the update or select a convenient time for their devices to restart.
Microsoft advises users to check for the update by navigating to Settings > Windows Update and selecting Check for updates. If eligible, users will see the option to download and install Windows 11, version 25H2.
For further information on servicing dates, users can refer to the Windows Lifecycle FAQ page or utilize the Lifecycle Policy search tool. Additionally, Microsoft has published a list of products scheduled for retirement or reaching the end of support in 2025.
It’s worth noting that Microsoft halted the rollout of security updates for the Home and Pro editions of Windows 11 23H2 in November. In a related development, the company quietly extended the free Windows 10 Extended Security Updates (ESU) program for consumers by an additional year in June. This extension allows enrolled devices to continue receiving essential security updates until October 12, 2027.
