OnePlus will continue software updates, all devices move to ColorOS with Android 17

In a significant shift for its global operations, OnePlus has announced the discontinuation of its proprietary Android interface, OxygenOS, in favor of Oppo’s ColorOS. This transition will commence with the rollout of Android 17 updates across all active OnePlus devices, including those in India, despite some skepticism about the brand’s continued presence in that market.

OnePlus articulated its rationale for this strategic pivot, stating:

As part of an operational adjustment to our software strategy, following the official release of ColorOS 17, users globally with existing OnePlus devices that fall within the eligible upgrade scope will have the option to voluntarily update to the latest ColorOS. This enables us to streamline software development, accelerate update delivery, improve software quality, and make better use of our shared engineering and R&D capabilities.

This decision may seem surprising, given that OxygenOS has been a cornerstone of OnePlus’ brand identity since its inception. However, the consolidation of software platforms appears to be a pragmatic approach to ensure ongoing support and updates for existing devices. Notably, OnePlus devices have already been utilizing ColorOS in China, indicating a gradual evolution towards this unified system.

Over the years, OxygenOS has increasingly mirrored ColorOS, with the primary distinctions lying in nuanced optimizations. Historically, OxygenOS has excelled in managing background activities and has been tailored to better suit the operational demands of global markets.

For users of older OnePlus models that do not qualify for the Android 17 update, the company has committed to providing “maintenance support” for existing OxygenOS versions. However, for newer devices, transitioning to ColorOS will be essential for ongoing support. OnePlus has also assured users that rollback options to OxygenOS will be available for those who prefer the previous interface.

OnePlus devices will be able to choose whether to update to the latest ColorOS system. Older models that are not included in the update scope will also continue to receive version maintenance support. If users update to ColorOS, they will be able to roll back to OxygenOS. The specific rollback versions available will be subject to future official announcements.

In its commitment to customer satisfaction, OnePlus has reiterated that all existing devices will continue to receive software updates, security patches, and necessary support, ensuring that users remain connected and secure in their digital experiences.

In a related development, Realme, another brand under the Oppo umbrella, has also confirmed its transition to ColorOS, starting with the Android 17 update.
