Microsoft is working on making Xbox 360 games playable on PC, leaked document reveals

Microsoft is poised to expand its gaming ecosystem by introducing Xbox 360 titles to PC platforms, as revealed in a recently leaked document obtained by The Verge. This strategic move aims to enhance the accessibility of classic games, allowing developers to bring their Xbox 360 creations to PCs equipped with the Xbox app, which includes devices such as the ROG Xbox Ally handheld.

Backwards Compatibility and Developer Control

The document outlines a framework that empowers developers with the ability to toggle backwards compatibility for their games. This means they can choose to make their titles available for purchase, set their own pricing, and decide whether to include them in the Game Pass subscription service. Microsoft plans to implement this feature gradually, with a rollout anticipated between 2027 and 2028 across next-generation devices.

In a related development, Microsoft has also announced plans to bring original Xbox games to PC, targeting a launch in October 2026. This initiative aligns with the company’s broader vision for Project Helix, the next-generation console that promises to support PC gaming.

Digitizing Physical Collections

Additionally, the document hints at an innovative feature that would allow players to convert their physical game collections into digital formats. This concept gained traction following Sony’s decision to phase out physical PlayStation discs. Although Microsoft has yet to formally announce this feature, Project Helix is expected to debut without a disc drive, suggesting a shift towards digital ownership.

The proposed digitization feature would enable owners of Xbox One and Series game discs to insert them into their consoles to obtain a digital copy. This digital license would be tied to both the user’s account and the physical disc, allowing for sharing while ensuring that the license transfers to the new owner.

While the disc-to-digital feature was initially slated for a beta release last month, its official launch has been delayed, indicating a possible shift in the timeline. Nevertheless, the prospect of making original Xbox and Xbox 360 games available on PC not only benefits gamers but also aligns seamlessly with Microsoft’s ambitions for Project Helix, which is designed to facilitate the playability of PC games on next-gen consoles.
