In a significant shift for its mobile ecosystem, Google has announced the impending discontinuation of Google Assistant on Android devices, effective September 4, 2026. An email dispatched to current users confirmed that the familiar assistant will be replaced by Gemini, the company’s next-generation AI-powered assistant.
Transitioning to Gemini
The phased removal of Google Assistant will commence on the specified date, with the process expected to take several weeks to fully implement across all devices. Once the transition is complete, users will find that access to Google Assistant will no longer be available on their mobile phones, tablets, or connected devices.
Once availability is removed, you will no longer be able to use or switch back to Google Assistant on your phone, tablet, or paired devices.
This change extends beyond just mobile devices; it will also affect Wear OS watches, headphones, and vehicles utilizing Android Auto that are projected from a user’s mobile device. However, for vehicles equipped with Google built-in, Google Assistant will continue to operate beyond the September 2026 deadline.
For cars with Google built-in, Google Assistant will continue to function beyond September 4, 2026.
While the current announcement pertains primarily to mobile and wearable devices, Google has indicated that Gemini will soon be available on Google TV devices, as well as Google Home speakers and smart displays. The timeline for Gemini’s rollout to the docked Pixel Tablet remains uncertain.

This decision to phase out Google Assistant was initially slated for the end of 2025 but has since been extended to 2026. Currently, users still have the option to switch to Google Assistant within the Gemini app, although this will soon become obsolete.
