Google Maps is poised to enhance the user experience with a range of innovative features through its Ask Maps initiative. Among the most notable updates is the introduction of food ordering directly from the app, allowing users to seamlessly discover and order meals without leaving their navigation route.
New Features and Functionalities
Imagine this scenario: after a long day at work, you can simply ask Google Maps to “order spicy pad kee mao with seafood for me to pick up on my way home.” The app will identify nearby restaurants along your route that serve your desired dish, factoring in your saved locations and dietary preferences. Once you select a restaurant, the dish is automatically added to your cart for a quick review and checkout.
This food ordering feature is initially launching in the United States, collaborating with partners such as Square and Toast, with Uber Eats integration on the horizon. Google is also developing a Universal Commerce Protocol for food ordering, with DoorDash joining the ranks of inaugural partners alongside Square, Toast, and Uber Eats.
Personalized Recommendations
In addition to food ordering, Google Maps is introducing a Personal Intelligence feature that connects with Gmail, Calendar, and other Google applications. This integration allows Ask Maps to provide tailored recommendations based on users’ plans and routines. For instance, if you have a hotel reservation, you might ask, “Give me ideas on how to spend a few hours near my hotel before my flight tomorrow.” Ask Maps will utilize your reservation details to suggest nearby attractions and advise on optimal departure times for the airport.
It’s worth noting that Gmail integration is disabled by default, ensuring users maintain control over their data connections. Calendar integration is also expected to roll out soon. Furthermore, if users have History enabled, Ask Maps will remember past conversations, allowing for a more fluid interaction.
Real-Time Transit Updates and User Contributions
Another exciting addition is the live Transit widget, which keeps users informed about real-time delays and schedule changes for various modes of transportation, including buses, trains, subways, and ferries. This feature aims to enhance the overall commuting experience by providing timely updates.
Google is also simplifying the process for users to contribute information to Maps. Through Ask Maps or the Contribute tab, users can suggest edits in a conversational manner. For example, by uploading a photo of a storefront sign, Google Maps can detect updated business hours from the image and prompt users to confirm these changes before submission.
As for availability, the live transit widget, personalized Ask Maps responses, and conversation history are currently rolling out in all regions where Ask Maps is accessible. The food ordering feature, along with hotel and event discovery, is debuting in the U.S. first, with plans for expansion to additional countries over time. Notably, Ask Maps is also set to expand its reach to Australia, Brazil, Canada, Indonesia, Japan, and Mexico, while being made available in English across more than 150 countries and territories.
