One of the biggest Linux distros is growing faster thanks to WSL for Windows 11 than it is its own desktop

Enthusiasts of the Windows Subsystem for Linux (WSL) have much to celebrate, particularly those who appreciate the seamless integration of Linux within the Windows 11 environment. This powerful tool has been a game-changer for developers, allowing them to run Linux applications without the complexities of virtual machines or dual-boot setups. Recent observations suggest that WSL may soon become Canonical’s most significant source of Ubuntu users.

Growing Popularity of Ubuntu on WSL

The Pragmatic Engineer’s Gergely Orosz highlighted a noteworthy trend reported by Windows Latest: the growth of Ubuntu on WSL is not only continuing but is also outpacing the traditional desktop usage of Ubuntu. This shift indicates that the number of users operating Ubuntu through WSL could soon surpass those using it natively.

“In a year, the growth in our WSL numbers is significantly higher than the growth in Desktop usage numbers. I expect to see more Ubuntu WSL users than ‘native’ Ubuntu users over the coming months.”

— Jon Seagar, VP of Engineering at Canonical

While it is essential to recognize that Linux encompasses more than just Ubuntu, the latter remains one of the most popular distributions. This trend is particularly intriguing given that overall Linux usage still lags behind Windows 11.

With the rise of artificial intelligence and specialized tools that often perform best on Linux, WSL offers a unique advantage by integrating with the existing Windows 11 file system. Many users, including myself, may only scratch the surface of WSL’s capabilities, yet it remains a fundamental component of any new machine setup.

Moreover, WSL is not limited to Ubuntu; users can explore a variety of distributions, including Fedora, which is a personal favorite for many. Microsoft continues to enhance WSL, with the latest feature being WSL Containers, alongside a dedicated version of Linux available for deployment in Azure.

While there are still valid reasons for maintaining a bare-metal Linux machine, the collaboration between Windows 11 and WSL creates a hybrid environment that meets the needs of many users effectively.
