Exclusive: Frosthaven digital reveals the PC board game’s frosty final character

After a year in early access, Frosthaven Digital is set to unveil its full 1.0 release on October 15. The dedicated team at Snapshot Games has diligently worked to enhance the game by adding features, classes, and missions, ensuring that the digital version aligns closely with the expansive board game it is based on. In a recent conversation with lead producer Hristo Petkov and original board game designer Isaac Childres, insights into the exciting developments were shared.

Streamlined Gameplay Experience

Team Wargamer has shown strong support for Frosthaven, with editor Mollie Russell awarding it an impressive 10/10 rating. The board game itself is a monumental endeavor, offering approximately 200 hours of campaign play. Frosthaven Digital, however, provides a more accessible experience through digital streamlining.

“In the physical version of Frosthaven, you can typically complete two to three scenarios in a five-hour session,” Petkov explains. “In the digital format, each scenario takes about 30 to 40 minutes, effectively doubling the pace.” The elimination of setup time and the automatic resolution of AI behaviors further enhance the experience.

Despite the convenience of digital play, the challenge of coordinating schedules remains. Childres notes, “I’ve been playing with friends since the early access launch, but coordinating schedules can be tricky. We’re not that far into it.” However, the online format alleviates some of the difficulties that arise when friends live in different locations.

Custom Save Feature

For those who have transitioned from in-person groups to remote play or wish to reunite with friends at conventions, the upcoming “custom save” feature promises to be a valuable addition. Petkov describes it as a “sandbox mode” allowing players to edit their saves, facilitating the import of campaigns from physical to digital formats. “We’re not replacing the physical game; we’re simply making it more accessible for those who struggle to find time for in-person sessions,” he emphasizes.

Faithful Adaptation

The 1.0 version of Frosthaven Digital aims to deliver a faithful representation of the original game. “Mechanically, it’s 99% accurate to the board game,” Petkov asserts, noting that minor visual adjustments have been made where necessary. For instance, one scenario involves the party climbing a massive monster, which required a shift from a top-down view to a side-on perspective. “While we altered the premise slightly, the mechanics remain intact,” he adds.

The Thrill of Discovery

One of the defining aspects of the Frosthaven experience is the excitement surrounding the unlocking of new content. Petkov and Childres remain somewhat reserved about revealing details regarding the final playable hero, the Shattersong. “It’s unlocked very late in the game, just a few missions before the finale, and plays a crucial role in the story,” Petkov reveals. “It serves a supportive function that enhances the abilities of other characters.”

Childres adds, “The Shattersong wasn’t part of the original game; I included it as a last-minute stretch goal due to the overwhelming success of the Frosthaven Kickstarter.” Petkov notes that implementing its mechanics posed challenges, particularly those that allow players to glimpse into the future.

While players may unlock the Shattersong near the conclusion of the main story, there is ample opportunity to explore its capabilities. “There are 137 missions in total,” Petkov explains, “with 64 classified as the main story. This means that more than half of the missions are side quests, allowing players to complete the game and still have plenty left to experience.” He adds that the non-linear nature of the game presents its own challenges in guiding players through branching paths.

Smoother Onboarding for New Players

For newcomers eager to embark on their Frosthaven journey, the 1.0 release will feature a more approachable onboarding process. “We have a straightforward three-mission tutorial that is very guided,” Petkov shares. “Following that, there’s a four-mission prequel that details how the mercenaries arrive at Frosthaven.” This leads seamlessly into the first mission of the original campaign, which Petkov admits is still quite challenging.

While I have yet to fully experience the 1.0 version of Frosthaven Digital, the prospect of enjoying this beloved game with friends across the country, all while accommodating the demands of adult life, is undeniably appealing.
