The studio behind Star Wars Zero Company is hiring back some of its furloughed staff

In a surprising turn of events, Bit Reactor, the developer behind the much-anticipated Star Wars Zero Company, faced significant challenges just prior to the game’s launch earlier this year. Over 80% of its workforce was placed on furlough due to uncertainties surrounding sales, leaving many employees without pay even as eager players began exploring the new title.

Earlier this week, Bit Reactor took to Bluesky to announce a reversal of this difficult decision, signaling a gradual return to normalcy. CEO Greg Foertsch explained that the furlough was a response to “unexpected business developments outside of our control,” emphasizing that it was a necessary step to facilitate the eventual reintegration of as many employees as possible.

According to an unnamed source from Game File, the studio’s payroll has now rebounded to over half of its pre-furlough levels. Initially, the impact of the furloughs was profound, as the majority of Bit Reactor’s staff were unable to provide support during the critical post-launch period. It’s important to note that this decision was made independently by Bit Reactor and did not involve its publisher, EA.

Despite the challenges faced during its launch, which included some notable issues that were promptly addressed in a subsequent patch, Star Wars Zero Company quickly ascended the Steam best sellers list. The game garnered praise from critics, including PC Gamer associate editor Ted Litchfield, who lauded it as “a new all-timer Star Wars game and a stunning debut for Bit Reactor.” This positive reception may well serve as a beacon of hope for the studio as it navigates these turbulent waters.
