A dedicated PC modder has transformed Capcom’s Resident Evil 2 remake into a dynamic two-player experience, introducing full local co-op functionality to the beloved survival horror title. This innovative mod, known as Local Couch Co-op, is the brainchild of Nexus Mods creator Shopcreeper01, who previously released a version called HUNK’y Friend. The mod’s description on Nexus Mods clarifies its unique approach: instead of merely adding a computer-controlled ally, it allows a second player to take full control of their own character, enhancing the gameplay experience significantly.
Shopcreeper01’s journey began with a personal motivation—creating a way for his wife to engage with games that intimidated her. What started as a supportive companion feature has now blossomed into a fully-fledged co-op mode, allowing players to navigate the eerie environments of Resident Evil 2 together.
What the second player gets
In this mod, Player 2 is not confined to the character HUNK; a variety of other characters are available for selection. Each character comes equipped with their own inventory, weapon set, and unique HUD elements, including a flashlight. The co-op mechanics are designed for seamless interaction: either player can face threats, share supplies, or revive a fallen partner, ensuring that the game continues only when both characters are incapacitated.
Display modes and requirements
The mod supports both shared-screen and split-screen display modes, catering to different player preferences. For those who prefer a solo experience, an AI companion mode is also available. To utilize this mod, players will need the Steam version of Resident Evil 2 along with REFramework, a popular modding framework tailored for Capcom’s RE Engine games. It’s important to note that this mod is exclusive to PC, leaving console gamers on PlayStation, Xbox, and Switch 2 without access to this exciting feature.
An experimental extra
Additionally, the mod includes an experimental mode inspired by Pragmata, Capcom’s upcoming sci-fi title. In this mode, one player manages movement while the other focuses on aiming and shooting, offering a fresh twist on cooperative gameplay.
