Xodus Nexus Project Opens Access to PC Catalog Game Pass on devices running Linux and SteamOS operating systems

Expanding Gaming Horizons on Linux

The independent developer community has made notable strides in enhancing the gaming experience on Linux and SteamOS platforms. Enthusiast domsvoboda has introduced the open-source Xodus Nexus project, an unofficial graphical launcher designed to enable users to browse, download, and locally launch supported games from services like Microsoft Store and PC Game Pass, all without relying on the Windows operating system.

This innovative application leverages a modified Xodus backend along with a dedicated Nexus runtime environment based on Proton, allowing it to interact seamlessly with the file system and Microsoft gaming services. Users can fully authorize their Xbox accounts, and the program supports cloud save syncing for compatible titles.

The list of games that have been benchmarked and successfully launched is impressive, featuring major titles such as:

  • Forza Horizon 6
  • Gears of War: E-Day
  • Sea of Thieves
  • Avowed
  • And many other popular releases

To enhance user experience, the latest version, v0.3.8, introduces features such as Xbox achievement tracking, playtime monitoring, and a display of recent activity. Additionally, users can conveniently add installed games to their Steam library as third-party shortcuts.

Despite these advancements, it is essential to note that the Xodus Nexus project remains an independent and amateur initiative, with no formal ties to Microsoft, Valve, or the core Xodus team. Game compatibility is still inconsistent, and support for the Steam Deck portable console, along with integration into Game Mode, is currently in an experimental phase. In some instances, initial account login or interaction with system windows may require a touchscreen or mouse.

Nevertheless, the ongoing development of Xodus Nexus holds the potential to dismantle one of the most significant barriers to comprehensive gaming on the Linux platform, paving the way for a more inclusive gaming environment.
