NordVPN is making a significant shift in its offerings by merging its VPN and antivirus protections into a single application. This evolution positions the service as an “all-in-one digital security app,” with a strong emphasis on privacy. The company has rebranded its Threat Protection Pro, now referred to as “next-generation antivirus,” and has structured the app around three foundational pillars: VPN, antivirus, and additional features like Dark Web Monitoring.
All-in-one protections
In a landscape where traditional antivirus solutions primarily focus on identifying malicious files, NordVPN recognizes the need for a more comprehensive approach. Modern threats such as phishing, counterfeit online stores, scam messages, and identity theft often exploit compromised credentials and social engineering tactics rather than relying solely on downloadable malware. To combat these evolving dangers, NordVPN aims to intercept threats in real time before they can reach users’ devices. The guiding pillars of this initiative include:
- Connect (VPN)
- Protect (Antivirus)
- Monitor (Other features including Dark Web Monitor)
Marijus Briedis, CTO of NordVPN, emphasized that “protection needs to evolve” to address the real risks individuals face online today. He noted that the new strategy reflects a growing demand from users for stronger security, reduced complexity, and fewer tools to manage. Rather than launching an entirely new product, NordVPN is rebranding its existing Threat Protection Pro, which will now provide:
- Scam and phishing protection
- Malware protection
- Ad and tracker blocking
- Identity and account takeover protection
- File and device protection
This revamped Threat Protection Pro is included in NordVPN Plus plans and higher, alongside the NordPass password manager. For those opting for the basic plans, Threat Protection Lite and essential Dark Web Monitoring are available. The NordVPN Complete plan offers enhanced features like Dark Web Monitor Pro, Scam Call protection, and encrypted cloud storage, while NordVPN Prime stands as the premium offering, encompassing all features along with identity theft protection through Coveron, formerly known as NordProtect.
Privacy remains a priority
NordVPN’s security strategy is anchored in the principle of collecting only the “minimum signal required to make a threat decision,” ensuring that the application does not become a “surveillance product.” This philosophy shapes the company’s approach to threat detection technologies, utilizing machine learning models to enhance accuracy and speed for specific threat categories.
“Consumers should not have to choose between convenience, protection, and privacy,” Briedis stated. “Our goal is to integrate advanced VPN technology with next-generation antivirus into a single, streamlined app experience that minimizes complexity and aligns with contemporary perceptions of digital safety.”
