PC gamers are demonstrating a remarkable willingness to invest in their gaming experiences, as highlighted by the latest findings from Newzoo’s 2025 PC and Console Gaming Report. In 2024, a significant 58% of total PC gaming revenue, amounting to an impressive .4 billion, was derived from microtransactions. This figure reflects a modest year-over-year growth of 1.4% in this segment.
Leading Contributors to Microtransaction Growth
The report identifies three standout titles that have significantly contributed to the surge in microtransaction revenue: Call of Duty: Black Ops 6, Roblox, and Fortnite. However, the increase in revenue was not limited to microtransactions alone. Downloadable content (DLC) also experienced a slight uptick, with revenue rising by 0.8% to reach .3 billion on PC. This segment accounted for 14% of overall revenue, bolstered by popular titles such as Diablo 4, Elden Ring, and World of Warcraft.
In contrast, the premium games sector saw a decline in revenue, contributing 28% of the total but falling to .7 billion—a decrease of 2.6% compared to the previous year. Despite this setback, the overall PC gaming revenue experienced a slight increase of 0.1%, totaling .3 billion for 2024.
When reflecting on the past two years, it is noteworthy that PC gaming revenue has risen by 5.4% since a dip between 2021 and 2022. Looking ahead, Newzoo forecasts a continued upward trajectory, predicting that revenue will reach .9 billion in 2025 and potentially hit the billion mark by 2027.
This trend raises intriguing questions about the future dynamics of PC gaming revenue, particularly the growing reliance on microtransactions.
