Android 17 brings a literal game changer to foldable phones – there’s just one major concern

Google Introduces Foldable Gaming Mode in Android 17 Update

Google has announced that it will be including a new Foldable Gaming Mode as part of its upcoming Android 17 update. This new feature will allow users to utilize the lower half of a foldable phone’s screen as a touch controller, providing a unique gaming experience similar to that of a clamshell handheld device.

With the rising prices of gaming handhelds like the MSI Claw 8 EX AI+ reaching a staggering ,800, turning to a device that is already in your pocket may be a more cost-effective option. Android games are becoming more advanced, closely resembling console counterparts, and emulation apps like GameNative allow users to play a wide range of Steam PC games on Android smartphones or tablets.

The Foldable Gaming Mode will be compatible with devices such as the Pixel 10 Pro Fold and Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 7, effectively transforming them into full-fledged gaming phones. By using the bottom half of the internal display as a controller while running the game on the upper half, the experience is akin to playing on a clamshell handheld device.

Google has stated that the control pad in Foldable Gaming Mode will be dynamic, allowing developers to customize controls based on the specific game being played. Additionally, Android 17 will enhance the use of external controllers with native controller remapping and improved memory management to reduce frame drops and stutters.

Foldable Gaming Mode is set to be available as part of the Android 17 update in the coming months, offering users a new and innovative way to enjoy gaming on their foldable devices.
