I find myself reflecting on Arc Raiders with increasing anticipation. Just three days have passed since the Server Slam concluded, yet my thoughts remain consumed by the experience. Fortunately, the full launch is imminent, and Embark Studios is fine-tuning the game based on insights gathered from its recent open playtest.
Game Adjustments and Player Feedback
Among the adjustments being made are enhancements to the visuals, addressing concerns regarding a perceived downgrade from the earlier Tech Test. Additionally, the flying Arc machines, which have been a point of contention, are undergoing a rebalancing. However, not all news is positive for those who exploited the Server Slam’s most significant loophole: the ability to access the Dam Tower loot cave through parkour maneuvers will no longer be possible.
For those unfamiliar, the Dam Tower serves as a focal point within Arc Raiders’ Dam Battlegrounds map. This location offers not only a strategic vantage point but also houses a locked room filled with coveted loot. Traditionally, entry requires a scavenged key or the defeat of a player carrying one. Yet, players quickly discovered an alternate route into this treasure trove.
By scaling to the top of the Dam Tower and carefully maneuvering to the roof’s edge, players could drop down to a ledge, allowing them to access the loot room with minimal resistance. While this method carried the risk of falling to one’s demise, it was a gamble many learned to master. The ability to unlock the door from within also provided a straightforward escape route after collecting the desired items.
Embark has acknowledged the ingenuity displayed by players in uncovering this exploit. In a recent blog post, they noted, “We watched many of you bravely, and perhaps a little too easily, access the Launch Tower on Dam Battlegrounds. It was fun to watch, but a bit too accessible for a key loot location. That’s been fixed to keep the challenge sharp.”
In addition to addressing the loot cave exploit, Embark has taken note of player feedback regarding the flying Arc machines, specifically the Snitch and the Hornet. These machines, designed to detect enemy movement, have been criticized for their heightened awareness, often spotting players despite attempts to hide behind environmental objects. The studio has admitted that “their awareness was a bit too high,” and adjustments will be made to reduce their effectiveness in detecting players through obstacles like trees and bushes.
Concerns regarding a visual downgrade have also been addressed. Participants in previous playtests expressed that Arc Raiders appeared less sharp and vibrant. An Embark community manager clarified that this was a result of “optimization to ensure higher and more stable framerates on low and mid spec hardware.” The studio confirmed that “the default settings did change a bit to favor more performance, and we are looking into tuning further to strike the right balance.”
Additionally, an engaging infographic showcasing statistics from the Server Slam has been shared, revealing that I was not alone in being caught off guard by the game’s dramatic thunderstorms.
As we approach the game’s release on Thursday, October 30, players are encouraged to familiarize themselves with the system requirements for Arc Raiders. For those eager for more challenges in harsh environments, a variety of survival games are available to explore in the meantime.
