For over a decade, Atomfall has been a passion project for Rebellion CEO Jason Kingsley, who has hinted at its development in conversations since 2018. Set against the backdrop of a post-nuclear disaster in the rugged landscapes of Cumbria, the game evokes a sense of nostalgia reminiscent of classic titles like Stalker, Morrowind, and Kingdom Come: Deliverance. Players can expect a challenging experience devoid of quest markers, where navigation is a test of skill and survival.
It’s grim up north
At Gamescom, Kingsley expressed some concerns regarding the game’s combat mechanics. However, it appears that Rebellion has dedicated significant time refining this aspect. The combat feels satisfying; swinging a cricket bat delivers a gratifying crunch, while the use of firearms feels almost like an unfair advantage. In a UK setting where firearms are scarce, drawing a rusty revolver can swiftly turn the tide of any encounter, making it a potent choice in a world filled with adversaries.
Wandering mind
The freedom to explore and make choices is a central theme in Atomfall. Kingsley emphasizes the developers’ intent to provide players with a genuine sense of autonomy, allowing for various play styles, including the option to engage in chaotic violence. The game adapts to player decisions, reminiscent of the narrative flexibility seen in titles like Fallout: New Vegas.
During a recent play session, I encountered a character named Mother Jago. After getting sidetracked by various quests, including a cave full of druids and a conspiracy in the village, I decided to take a bold step and shot her with an arrow. To my surprise, she collapsed without a game over screen or any indication of a misstep. This unexpected outcome led to new plot developments, showcasing the game’s dynamic narrative structure.
Kingsley acknowledges the novelty of this approach for Rebellion, which has traditionally focused on more linear gameplay experiences. He expresses a mix of excitement and nervousness about venturing into this new territory. As the anticipation builds, Atomfall is set to launch on Steam, Epic, and the Rebellion store on March 27.
