Baldur’s Gate 3 is ‘an inspiration’ for CD Projekt, but it’s all-in on big open worlds: ‘We are definitely not going to make a game like Larian did’

In a recent conversation with PC Gamer’s Joshua Wolens, CD Projekt’s joint CEO Michał Nowakowski reflected on the remarkable success of Baldur’s Gate 3, a title that has reignited interest in classic CRPG elements. The game has not only captivated players with its immersive, player-driven narratives but has also set a high bar for storytelling in the gaming industry. However, despite the inspiration drawn from this success, Nowakowski emphasized that CD Projekt Red (CDPR) is charting its own course for future projects.

Future Directions for CD Projekt Red

Nowakowski articulated a clear vision for the studio’s future, stating, “There was a lot of inspiration in what Baldur’s Gate 3 did, but I think we’re still sticking to what was in Witcher 3, Cyberpunk. But we don’t want to just make another game like that, just with better graphics. We do want to innovate.” This statement underscores CDPR’s commitment to evolving its game design while maintaining the essence of its beloved franchises.

While details about upcoming projects remain under wraps, Nowakowski was definitive in his assertion that CDPR’s next title will not mirror the style of Larian Studios’ work. “We definitely are not going to make a game like Larian did,” he stated. Instead, he acknowledged that the interactive elements and world-building showcased in Baldur’s Gate 3 have certainly provided inspiration for CDPR’s creative team.

Historically, CDPR has ventured into new territories with spinoffs such as Gwent and Thronebreaker. However, Nowakowski noted a strategic shift: “We made at some point the decision that the in-house team has to focus on the key pillar games rather than doing spinoffs … maybe that’s going to change, but at the moment, the way we are structured right now, we don’t necessarily want to walk away from that.” This focus suggests that CDPR is prioritizing the development of core titles that can push the boundaries of open-world gaming.

As anticipation builds for CDPR’s next open-world adventure, there is a sense of curiosity about how the studio will blend innovation with its established storytelling prowess. Cyberpunk 2077, despite its rocky launch, eventually evolved into a visually stunning experience, while The Witcher 3 remains a benchmark for RPGs. With the potential to captivate audiences once again, the next installment from CDPR may very well offer a fresh perspective that draws players away from their current favorites, including the much-lauded Baldur’s Gate 3.
